Dutch riot police broke up a far-right demonstration of several hundred protesters in The Hague on September 19 after violence erupted, with demonstrators pelting police with fireworks and chanting antisemitic slogans. Local authorities banned the planned march against immigration and asylum.
A tribunal in The Hague convicted Kosovo's former President Hashim Thaci of war crimes including murder, torture, and illegal detention committed during the 1990s war for independence from Serbia, when he served as a senior commander of the Kosovo Liberation Army. Three co-defendants also received prison sentences ranging from 13 to 25 years.
International Criminal Court President Tomoko Akane, recently sanctioned by the United States, called on Japan to resist American pressure on ICC members to withdraw from the court. The appeal comes as Washington escalates its campaign against the Hague-based tribunal, partly in response to war crimes charges against Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.
