Japan considers nearly doubling defense spending to $500 billion over five years
Japan's government and ruling coalition are considering defense spending of 70-80 trillion yen ($457-508 billion) for the five years from April 2027, approximately 1.8 times the current plan's 43 trillion yen allocation. The proposal is part of Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi's push to strengthen the country's military capabilities.
