NASA's Artemis II Successfully Launches First Crewed Lunar Mission in Over 50 Years

NASA's Artemis II mission successfully launches four astronauts—three Americans including commander Reid Wiseman, pilot Victor Glover, Christina Koch, and Canadian Jeremy Hansen—from Kennedy Space Center on humanity's first crewed lunar flight since 1972. The 10-day mission will test deep-space life-support systems and fly 4,000 to 6,000 miles above the Moon's surface, potentially exceeding Apollo 13's distance record of 250,000 miles from Earth. NASA modified the re-entry profile after discovering heat shield cracking during the uncrewed Artemis I test flight. The launch draws an estimated 400,000 spectators to Florida's Space Coast, generating approximately $160 million in economic impact. Future Artemis missions aim to establish a permanent Moon base to exploit natural resources and serve as a springboard for Mars exploration.
