A 2025 study published in Nature Medicine detected microplastics and nanoplastics in human brain tissue from deceased individuals, confirming these particles can cross the blood-brain barrier. Multiple studies using pyrolysis-gas chromatography-mass spectrometry have detected microplastics in human arteries, blood, cardiac surgery patients, and endometrium tissue. Animal studies demonstrate concerning effects including cerebral thrombosis, impaired memory and learning, microglia activation, and neurotoxicity in mice, while a 2024 study linked nanoplastic exposure to Parkinson's alpha-synuclein amyloidogenesis. Medical equipment including injection syringes and PDMS materials may represent unrecognized exposure routes. Despite confirmation of brain penetration, the concentrations, distribution patterns, and direct health effects in humans remain uncertain and require further investigation.
