a16z-Backed Blockchain Gaming Studio Proof of Play Shuts Down, Cites Failure to Build Sustainable Business
US blockchain game developer Proof of Play is ceasing operations after failing to build a sustainable business around its fully on-chain gaming thesis. Despite raising $33 million in 2023 from a16z and Greenoaks, and achieving massive transaction volumes on its flagship game Pirate Nation, the studio could not transition speculative player activity into long-term retention. Proof of Play is open-sourcing its code and releasing its art assets under a CC0 license, while the independent Pirate Nation Foundation will take over support for the PIRATE token.
