Both chambers of the UK Parliament have approved the Tobacco and Vapes Bill, which bans cigarette sales to anyone born after January 1, 2009, making Britain the second country to implement such generational prohibition after New Zealand briefly enacted a similar law in 2022 before repealing it in 2023. The legislation also extends smoking bans to outdoor spaces near schools, hospitals, and playgrounds, and grants new powers to restrict vape flavors and packaging while banning disposable vapes already prohibited since June last year. Health Secretary Wes Streeting called it a historic moment aimed at preventing the 75,000 annual smoking deaths in England and easing pressure on the National Health Service. The Maldives also enacted a similar ban in November for those born after January 1, 2007.
