Monsoon floods kill at least 50 and displace 700,000 across India

Relentless monsoon rains across India have triggered devastating floods and landslides, killing over 50 people and displacing 700,000 in Assam alone. The Brahmaputra River has submerged nearly 900 villages, forcing 300,000 into relief camps. In Gujarat, extreme rainfall exceeding 1,100 mm in Valsad prompted the evacuation of 22,000 people. Meanwhile, landslides in Jammu and Kashmir have claimed 23 lives and blocked the strategic Jammu-Srinagar highway, severely disrupting regional transport.

Assam monsoon flooding crisis

▪Monsoon flooding in Assam has killed at least 50 people and displaced 700,000 after days of heavy rain overflowed the Brahmaputra River.
▪The Brahmaputra River and several of its tributaries continued to flow above danger levels, submerging nearly 900 villages and over 24,000 hectares of cropland.
▪Sivasagar is the worst-hit district in Assam, with 3.75 lakh people affected, followed by Charaideo with 1.86 lakh and Jorhat with 1.15 lakh.

Gujarat heavy rainfall evacuations

▪Heavy monsoon rains in South Gujarat prompted the evacuation of more than 22,000 residents to safer places, while around 1,200 stranded people were rescued.
▪Umbergaon taluka in Valsad district, Gujarat, recorded over 1,100 mm of rainfall in a 16-to-36-hour period, causing severe flooding.

Jammu Kashmir flash floods

▪At least seven fatalities occurred in a cloudburst-triggered flash flood in the Surankote area of Poonch district in Jammu and Kashmir.
▪Relentless rain over five days killed 23 people and left seven missing in flash floods and landslides across Jammu and Kashmir.

Government disaster relief operations

▪Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma announced that Union Home Minister Amit Shah will send an inter-ministerial central team to assess flood damage.
▪Assam authorities provided food and relief supplies to flood victims, including airdrops from helicopters, and set up hundreds of relief camps.

IMD monsoon weather alerts

▪The India Meteorological Department issued an orange alert for Mumbai, predicting heavy to very heavy rain with wind gusts up to 70 km/h.
▪The India Meteorological Department issued red alerts for heavy to extremely heavy rain in several Gujarat districts, including Bharuch, Surat, Navsari, and Valsad.

Infrastructure damage across India

▪Rising water levels at Railway Bridge No. 203 forced the temporary suspension of rail traffic between Gholvad and Umargam stations on the Western Railway.
▪A major motorable bridge at Kallar-Androla over the Munawer River in Jammu and Kashmir was severely damaged by flash floodwaters before its public opening.
▪Landslides and debris accumulation forced the temporary closure of the strategic 250-km Jammu-Srinagar National Highway, stranding numerous vehicles.
