The death toll from the Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of Congo has surpassed 5,000, with over 10,000 confirmed cases across eight provinces. Driven by the rare Bundibugyo species for which no approved vaccines or treatments exist, the epidemic is now the second-largest in global history. Armed conflict in the epicentre of Ituri province, alongside violent attacks on health workers, continues to hinder containment efforts as cases extend into Kenya, Uganda, and Nigeria.
