Nvidia committed at least $6.5 billion to photonics technology companies in the three months prior to May 29, 2026, racing to solve AI infrastructure bottlenecks. CEO Jensen Huang stated in March 2026 that silicon photonics capacity needed substantially exceeds world supply. The investments include $2 billion into Lumentum, Coherent, and Marvell since early March 2026, and $500 million in Ayer Labs' Series E. Photonics uses light instead of electrical signals to transmit data between GPUs, memory, and servers with lower energy consumption.
