Over 600 Google employees, including more than 20 principals, directors, and vice presidents, signed a letter to CEO Sundar Pichai demanding the company refuse Pentagon requests to use Google AI models for classified military purposes. Many signers work in Google's DeepMind AI lab. The letter argues that rejecting classified workloads is the only way to guarantee Google does not become associated with harms, warning that classified Pentagon uses may occur without employees' knowledge or power to stop them. The controversy emerges as Anthropic is currently in a legal battle with the Pentagon over similar AI military applications.
