Belarus has released 25 political prisoners, including prominent journalists and media managers, who were subsequently sent to Lithuania. In exchange, the Trump administration agreed to lift U.S. sanctions on two Belarusian state-owned companies, Lakokraska and Bellesbumprom. The swap is part of a direct diplomatic approach led by U.S. special envoy John Coale. While the U.S. hopes to secure hundreds more releases, exiled opposition leaders and human rights groups warn that President Alexander Lukashenko is using prisoners as bargaining chips, noting that over 880 political prisoners remain detained.
