AMD Announces 6th Generation EPYC 9006 Series Server CPUs with Up to 256 Cores for AI and Enterprise Workloads

AMD announced its 6th Gen EPYC 9006 Series server CPUs, codenamed Venice, featuring configurations with up to 256 Zen 6c cores for agentic AI, cloud, and HPC workloads. AMD described the portfolio as addressing a three-tier agentic data center architecture through specialized variants including the high-density SP7, the efficient SP8, and the high-cache 9006X. Industry partners including ASUS, MSI, and Ace Computers announced server lineups based on the new processors.

AMD EPYC 9006 Series launch

▪The AMD EPYC 9006 Series processors feature up to 256 Zen 6c cores, up to 96 Zen 6 cores, and up to 1152 MB of 3D V-Cache.
▪AMD announced the 6th Gen AMD EPYC 9006 Series server processors, codenamed Venice, at the Advancing AI 2026 event on July 23, 2026.
▪Ace Computers will begin shipping Powerworks servers featuring AMD EPYC 9006 SP7 systems in November 2026 at SC26 in Chicago.

Agentic AI infrastructure demands

▪AMD said agentic AI is transforming AI from systems that answer questions into systems that act, plan, call tools, write and execute code, and reason over enterprise data.
▪AMD said agentic AI depends on CPU-powered infrastructure to run agents, coordinate work, connect to enterprise data, and keep accelerators fed across complex AI systems.

Three-tier data center architecture

▪AMD described the modern data center as changing into a three-tier agentic architecture consisting of agent sandbox execution, AI host nodes, and general-purpose servers.
▪In AMD's three-tier model, the agent sandbox CPU coordinates agents, executes spawned code and tasks, manages memory and system state, and handles I/O outside the GPU.

EPYC 9006 processor variants

▪The AMD EPYC 9006 SP7 family offers configurations with up to 256 cores and 512 threads, while separate high-frequency configurations reach up to 5 GHz; the platform supports up to 128 lanes of PCIe Gen6 connectivity.
▪The AMD EPYC 9006 SP8 offers a flexible 8- to 128-core design optimized for power-constrained racks, edge computing, and smaller clusters.
▪Some AMD EPYC 9006X SP7 variants reach frequencies of up to 5.15 GHz, while the processor family offers up to three times the L3 cache per core of AMD EPYC 9006 SP7.
▪The AMD EPYC 9006 LP, codenamed Verano, is an AI host node CPU supporting LPDDR5X memory and up to 5 GHz frequency.

Workload-optimized CPU portfolio strategy

▪MSI expanded its server portfolio with SP7 and SP8 platforms, including the CD270-S4091-X2 multi-node server, powered by 6th Gen AMD EPYC processors.
▪AMD's workload-optimized strategy provides multiple design points sharing a common software ecosystem and security foundation to let customers compose data centers to specific tasks.
▪ASUS announced its RS700A/720A dual-socket and RS500A/520A single-socket server lineups powered by AMD EPYC 9006 processors.
