Robinhood Ventures Fund I, a publicly-traded closed-end fund, invested approximately $75 million in OpenAI common stock, marking one of its largest investments since launch and giving retail investors indirect exposure to the AI company recently valued at $852 billion. The fund aims to democratize private market access by eliminating accreditation requirements, high minimum thresholds, and complex structures that typically restrict such investments to wealthy investors. This comes as the number of U.S. publicly-traded companies has fallen from 7,000 in 2000 to 4,000 last year, while private firms now outnumber public ones by more than 6.5 times and represent over $10 trillion in estimated value. OpenAI, led by Sam Altman and competing with Anthropic and Google in frontier AI, is believed to be preparing for a potential public offering later this year.
