North Korea Opens Memorial Museum for Troops Killed Fighting for Russia

North Korea opened a memorial museum in Pyongyang on Sunday commemorating North Korean soldiers killed fighting alongside Russian forces in Ukraine's Kursk region, with Kim Jong Un and Russian Defense Minister Andrei Belousov attending the inaugural ceremony. South Korea's intelligence agency estimates approximately 15,000 North Korean troops were deployed to Kursk, with about 2,000 killed in combat, though Moscow and Pyongyang have not disclosed casualty figures. The ceremony marked the first anniversary of what both nations describe as the liberation of Russia's Kursk border region from Ukrainian incursion, with Kim pledging full support for Russia's 'sacred war' and Belousov announcing readiness to sign a military cooperation plan covering 2027-31. Officials in South Korea, the United States and allied countries fear the deepening military partnership could result in Russia transferring advanced nuclear and missile technologies to North Korea in exchange for troops and conventional weapons.
