Coinbase launches AI agent payment tools as agent traffic surpasses human traffic on Base documentation pages

Coinbase has introduced a suite of payment, trading and developer tools for the emerging AI agent economy. A Coinbase spokesperson told The Block that, starting in June 2026, around 53% of web traffic to the Base blockchain's documentation came from agentic visitors. Coinbase Business is rolling out USDC payment acceptance through the x402 standard, while Coinbase for Agents now supports natural-language conditional trading. A new CDP x402 SDK also enables developers to add agent payment acceptance to an API, MCP server or web service using three lines of code.

AI agent traffic dominance

▪Starting in June 2026, around 53% of web traffic to the Base blockchain's documentation came from agentic visitors, a Coinbase spokesperson told The Block.
▪AI agents are querying APIs, reading documentation, and executing on-chain logic at a scale and speed that exceeds human capacity.

Business USDC agent payments

▪Coinbase Business users can earn 3.35% in rewards on idle USDC balances and manage all agent payments within a single account.
▪Coinbase Business is rolling out a payments stack that allows merchants to accept USDC payments directly from AI agents starting the week of July 23, 2026.
▪Coinbase Business head Siddharth Coelho-Prabhu said the unit had signed up about 5,000 customers, generated about $1 billion in combined payments and trading volume, and grown to about 12 employees since launching in June 2025.

x402 payment standard integration

▪The x402 payment standard is designed for automated, internet-native, pay-per-use micro-commerce transactions without requiring extra setup or custom middleware for merchants.
▪The new agent payment feature is powered by Coinbase Payments and utilizes x402, an open internet payments standard incubated by Coinbase.

Agent-controlled conditional trading

▪Users can set automated triggers in plain English, such as instructing an agent to purchase Ethereum after a 5% decline, while retaining control over the execution parameters.
▪Coinbase has expanded Coinbase for Agents with real-time WebSocket market data streams and plain-English conditional trading commands.

CDP x402 SDK launch

▪Coinbase Developer Platform launched the CDP x402 SDK, allowing developers to integrate x402 agent payment acceptance into any API, MCP server, or web service using three lines of code.
▪The CDP x402 SDK includes a pre-configured managed wallet system and a policy engine for spend controls to reduce setup overhead for developers.
