A catamaran passenger ferry, the FILOJET, capsized and sank in deep waters off Kyrenia, northern Cyprus, on August 30, 2026, leaving at least eight people dead and up to 20 missing. The vessel, carrying 267 passengers and crew, suffered a severe bow breach after slamming violently against the water. While rescuers successfully saved over 230 survivors, the ship's descent to a depth of 514 meters hampers search efforts. The ship's captain and crew have been detained under charges of negligent homicide.
