A major search and rescue operation is underway off Palawan, Philippines, after the passenger ferry MV June Aster caught fire on September 9, 2026. The vessel was carrying 134 people from Manila to Coron when the blaze broke out. At least five people are confirmed dead and 43 have been rescued, leaving over 80 people missing. Search efforts led by Commodore Noemie Cayabyab are severely challenged by thick smoke, extreme heat, explosion risks, and strong currents that have dragged the burning ship.
