US Closes Peshawar Consulate, Transfers Operations to Islamabad

The US State Department announced the phased closure of its consulate in Peshawar, Pakistan, transferring operations to the embassy in Islamabad. The closure, under consideration for more than a year, will save $7.5 million annually. The decision follows regional security concerns after 11 people were killed when protesters breached the Karachi consulate's outer wall in March 2026, following the February 28, 2026 US-Israeli war against Iran that sparked protests across Pakistan.
