China's CXMT becomes first chipmaker to mass produce LPDDR6 memory for Xiaomi smartphones

Aug 28, 2026

China's top memory chipmaker, ChangXin Memory Technologies (CXMT), has commenced mass production of next-generation LPDDR6 DRAM chips, which will debut in Xiaomi's upcoming 18 Fold smartphone in September 2026. This milestone narrows the technology gap between Chinese silicon and global leaders like Samsung and SK Hynix. The announcement coincides with CXMT reporting an 874% surge in first-half 2026 revenue to 150.3 billion yuan ($22.36 billion) and filing a federal lawsuit against the Pentagon over its Chinese Military Company designation.

CXMT LPDDR6 mass production

  • ▪ChangXin Memory Technologies has shipped evaluation samples of its LPDDR6 DRAM chips to enterprise clients for mobile, server, and smart vehicle applications.
  • ▪The JEDEC JESD209-6 standard for LPDDR6 memory, released in July 2025, utilizes four 24-bit subchannels and supports data rates from 10.667 Gbps to 14.4 Gbps.
  • ▪ChangXin Memory Technologies announced on August 29, 2026, that it has commenced mass production of its next-generation LPDDR6 dynamic random-access memory chips.
  • ▪ChangXin Memory Technologies is the first semiconductor manufacturer to publicly confirm mass production of LPDDR6 memory alongside a named debut device.
  • ▪ChangXin Memory Technologies' LPDDR6 chips are rated at a peak speed of 12,800 Mbps, which is constrained by the company's use of deep-ultraviolet lithography.

Xiaomi 18 Fold specifications

  • ▪Xiaomi's upcoming flagship foldable smartphone, the Xiaomi 18 Fold, will be the first commercial device to feature ChangXin Memory Technologies' LPDDR6 memory.
  • ▪The Xiaomi 18 Fold is scheduled for official market release in September 2026 with an estimated shipment target of 200,000 to 300,000 units.
  • ▪The Xring O3 processor achieves 113.8 gigabytes per second of memory bandwidth when running ChangXin Memory Technologies' LPDDR6 memory at 10,667 MT/s.
  • ▪The Xiaomi 18 Fold will feature Xiaomi's in-house 3-nanometer Xring O3 processor, which integrates 24 billion transistors and natively supports LPDDR6 memory.

Chinese DRAM technology advancement

  • ▪Xiaomi is a strategic investor in ChangXin Memory Technologies, having participated in the chipmaker's 66.6 billion yuan Shanghai STAR Market IPO in July 2026.
  • ▪ChangXin Memory Technologies holds approximately 7% to 10% of the global DRAM market by revenue, up from roughly 3% in the first half of 2025.
  • ▪ChangXin Memory Technologies employed 7,491 research and development staff and spent 6.859 billion yuan on R&D during the first half of 2026.
  • ▪ChangXin Memory Technologies' LPDDR6 mass production began less than 12 months after the company started mass-producing its previous-generation LPDDR5 chips.

CXMT first-half 2026 earnings

  • ▪ChangXin Memory Technologies reported first-half 2026 revenue of 150.3 billion yuan ($22.36 billion), representing an 874% year-on-year surge.
  • ▪ChangXin Memory Technologies recorded a swing to profit in the first half of 2026, marking its first earnings release since listing on the Shanghai Stock Exchange.

Pentagon Chinese Military Company lawsuit

  • ▪Apple lobbied the Trump administration for clearance to purchase memory chips from ChangXin Memory Technologies despite the company's inclusion on the Pentagon's blacklist.
  • ▪Under Section 805 of the FY2024 NDAA, the U.S. Department of Defense's direct procurement ban on ChangXin Memory Technologies took effect on June 30, 2026.
  • ▪ChangXin Memory Technologies filed a federal lawsuit against the U.S. Department of Defense on August 28, 2026, challenging its Chinese Military Company designation.

AI memory chip shortage

  • ▪Established DRAM leaders Samsung and Micron have redirected significant wafer capacity toward high-bandwidth memory for AI data centers, leaving the mobile LPDDR segment less contested.
  • ▪Global semiconductor companies are experiencing surging revenues and profits due to a global memory shortage driven by the artificial-intelligence boom.
