Kenya migrates 30 million academic records to Avalanche blockchain
Kenya's National Examinations Council (KNEC) has migrated over 30 million academic records to the Avalanche blockchain to combat widespread certificate fraud. The new system, one of Avalanche's largest public-sector projects, reduces verification time from months to seconds. While records dating to 1989 are now tamper-proof, the price of Avalanche's AVAX token remains down nearly 70% year-over-year.
Kenya blockchain records migration
▪Certificates for the 2025 KCSE exams, taken by nearly 1 million students, are available exclusively through the new digital system.
▪The system is expected to grow to about 35 million records and includes credentials dating back to 1989.
▪The migration was announced by KNEC and Avalanche on August 3, 2026.
▪Kenya's National Examinations Council (KNEC) has placed over 30 million academic records on the Avalanche blockchain.
▪The project covers records for Grade 8 (KCPE), Grade 12 (KCSE), advanced diplomas, and teaching certifications.
Certificate verification speed improvement
▪KNEC Chief Executive Officer Dr. David Njengere said students can now securely access, download, and verify their KCSE certificates online.
▪The new system reduces certificate verification time from weeks or months to just seconds.
▪Under the previous system, bulk verification for large recruiters could take as long as six months.
Fraud prevention through blockchain
▪Each record on the Avalanche blockchain is a secure, unchangeable entry, making credentials difficult to tamper with.
▪The old system's QR codes were vulnerable as they linked to normal databases that could be replicated on fake websites.
▪The initiative aims to combat the thousands of forged academic certificates reported in Kenya annually.
Avalanche government deployments
▪Avalanche has also been used for government projects in India (700,000 land records), the California DMV (42 million vehicle titles), and Bergen County, NJ.
▪The Kenya project is one of Avalanche's largest public-sector deployments.
AVAX price performance
▪On August 3, 2026, the price of Avalanche's native token, AVAX, was around $6.52.
▪It has not been clarified if the deployment is expected to generate demand for the AVAX token.
▪The AVAX token price was down approximately 69-70% from its level a year prior as of August 3, 2026.
