Ukrainian naval drones hit and sank the Russian-flagged container ship Yanina, owned by state nuclear giant Rosatom, in the Black Sea overnight on August 1, 2026. The strike occurred 130 miles off Novorossiysk. All 17 crew members survived and were rescued by a civilian vessel and Russian military aircraft. Rosatom CEO Alexey Likhachev condemned the attack as piracy on a civilian vessel carrying food and building materials, while Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy defended the strike as targeting facilities that sustain Russia's war effort.
