Wall Street broker Bernstein published research characterizing quantum computing as a manageable multi-year upgrade cycle for Bitcoin rather than an existential crisis. While quantum computers could eventually weaken elliptic curve encryption underpinning crypto wallets, Bernstein expects the industry has three to five years to transition to post-quantum cryptography. The risk is concentrated in approximately 1.7 million BTC held in older legacy wallets with exposed keys, while Bitcoin's SHA-based mining remains secure even in advanced quantum scenarios. Lightning Labs CTO Olaoluwa Osuntokun has already built a prototype tool to rescue wallets if emergency quantum-defense upgrades activate, and the industry is discussing new wallet standards, reduced address reuse, and key rotation as protective measures.
