Brazil's state-controlled energy giant Petrobras is testing two research-stage blockchain applications on the Cardano network to track environmental claims for sustainable fuels. Developed alongside the Cardano Foundation and PUC-Rio's Ledger Labs, the tools target sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) and Petrobras' Diesel R. The SAF tool tokenizes environmental attributes into CS-SAF tokens to prevent double-counting under a Book-and-Claim model, while the Diesel R tool logs lifecycle checkpoints to support Scope 3 emissions reporting. No commercial rollout timeline has been disclosed.
Sustainable aviation fuel tracking application
- ▪Petrobras' sustainable aviation fuel application represents environmental attributes as standardized CS-SAF tokens on Cardano, carrying metadata aligned with the Carbon Offsetting and Reduction Scheme for International Aviation (CORSIA)
- ▪Petrobras' sustainable aviation fuel application tokenizes environmental attributes into digital tokens that can be minted, transferred, and retired to prevent the same emissions reduction from being claimed twice
History of the research collaboration
- ▪In April 2025, the Cardano Foundation announced a research collaboration with PUC-Rio's Ledger Labs focusing on blockchain uses for renewable fuels, with Petrobras as an industry partner
- ▪The collaboration between Petrobras and the Cardano Foundation began in December 2023 with blockchain education workshops for Petrobras employees through Petrobras University
- ▪The Cardano Foundation, Petrobras, and Rio de Janeiro's Pontifical Catholic University (PUC-Rio) Ledger Labs collaborated to develop the SAF and Diesel R blockchain applications
Other blockchain fuel tracking initiatives
- ▪Shell has used blockchain to track sustainable aviation fuel attributes through its Avelia Book-and-Claim platform, which contributed to over 84 million gallons of sustainable fuel entering the global network since 2022
- ▪Australia's Viva Energy partnered with NoviqTech in January 2026 to research digital Book-and-Claim systems and blockchain tracking for sustainable aviation fuel
Debatable claims
- ▪Tokenizing environmental attributes does more harm than good
- ▪State-controlled oil companies are justified in funding blockchain research for green initiatives
- ▪Blockchain technology is necessary to prevent the double-counting of carbon offsets
- ▪The Book-and-Claim model is an effective way to scale sustainable aviation fuels
