European Central Bank President Christine Lagarde personally intervened to block crypto exchange Binance from obtaining an EU-wide Markets in Crypto-Assets (MiCA) license through Greek regulators. Lagarde urged Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis to reject the bid, citing Binance's 2023 US criminal conviction and concerns that the exchange's scale would accelerate the adoption of US dollar-backed stablecoins, thereby undermining the ECB's planned digital euro. Consequently, Binance withdrew its Greek application on June 24, 2026, locking it out of direct marketing to the EU's 450 million citizens.
