Heavy smoke from hundreds of wildfires in Canada blanketed the U.S. Midwest and parts of the East Coast, triggering air quality alerts in more than 20 states. Officials reported 858 active fires across Canada, including 111 classified as out of control. Detroit registered the worst air quality of any city in the world on July 16, 2026, according to IQAir, with an index of 600, while cities including New York and Chicago experienced unhealthy to hazardous conditions. Officials cancelled outdoor events, distributed face masks and urged residents to limit their exposure to dangerous PM2.5 pollution.
