Ethereum Researchers Propose EIP-8363 to Slash Validator Rewards as Staked ETH Approaches 50% of Supply

Six Ethereum researchers, including Justin Drake, have proposed EIP-8363 to gradually burn validator rewards as staked ETH approaches 60.25 million (50% of supply), eventually cutting issuance to zero. Proponents argue this prevents dilution and limits centralization. However, the proposal has sparked backlash from DeFi founders like Stani Kulechov and stakers like Mike Silagadze, who warn it will crush solo validators, disrupt DeFi borrowing, and has been rushed ahead of Hegotá upgrade deadlines.

EIP-8363 tapered issuance proposal

▪A group of six Ethereum researchers and developers, including Justin Drake of the Ethereum Foundation, proposed EIP-8363, a draft policy called the Tapered Issuance Burn, to reduce validator rewards as the share of staked ETH grows.
▪Co-author Jérôme de Tychey stated that Ethereum's staking ratio passed 33% of the supply in April 2026, and warned that a worst-case scenario could see over 55% of the supply staked by January 2028.

Validator reward burn mechanism

Solo validator economic impact

▪Critics, including Ether.Fi CEO Mike Silagadze, argue that EIP-8363 would disproportionately harm solo validators due to their higher relative costs, forcing them out in favor of large centralized entities.
