German Chief of Defence General Carsten Breuer has been elected as the next chair of the NATO military committee, succeeding Italian Admiral Giuseppe Cavo Dragone in mid-2027. Breuer, who defeated Canada's Jennie Carignan, will advise NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte during a period of geopolitical upheaval. The transition occurs as European nations, led by Germany's plan to double its defense budget to over €200 billion by 2030, ramp up military spending in response to Russia's invasion of Ukraine and demands from US President Donald Trump.
