Myanmar rejects ASEAN and US calls for the unconditional release of Aung San Suu Kyi

Myanmar's military-backed government has rejected renewed demands from ASEAN and the United States for the unconditional release of former leader Aung San Suu Kyi, 81. The regime stated that such demands interfere with its sovereign judicial process. The international calls followed an August 3, 2026 meeting in Naypyidaw between Suu Kyi and ICRC representative Arnaud de Baecque, which produced her first public photographs since the 2021 coup. Meanwhile, a Thai lawmaker was removed from parliament for protesting a visit by Myanmar's junta chief Min Aung Hlaing.

Myanmar rejects ASEAN calls

Political prisoner release demands

Sovereignty judicial process defense

▪The Myanmar Ministry of Foreign Affairs stated that Aung San Suu Kyi was convicted of electoral fraud, corruption, and maladministration, and any release will only occur in accordance with domestic law.

Thai parliamentary protest
