Cocaine smugglers are outrunning Spanish law enforcement using high-speed, multi-engine fiberglass vessels known as narcolanchas. These custom-built boats, costing over $500,000, can reach 60 knots and carry up to four tons of cocaine. Spanish authorities are severely outmatched, with fewer than 10 patrol boats capable of intercepting them. The impunity of these networks was highlighted by a fatal 2024 attack that killed two Civil Guard officers. Meanwhile, a massive supply glut has doubled Spanish cocaine seizures to 117 tons, driving wholesale prices down to $15,000 per kilo.
