Sony AI has unveiled Ace, a ping-pong robot that has become the first to defeat elite human table tennis players while adhering to official International Table Tennis Federation (ITTF) rules. Unlike previous robots such as Omron's FORPHEUS, which competed against amateurs at CES 2017, Ace can hold its own against and occasionally beat top-ranked players. The achievement represents a significant advance in embodied AI, as physical games require robots to match both the speed and responsiveness of human minds and bodies—a far greater challenge than board games like Chess and Go where AI already dominates. Sony AI positions the robot as a breakthrough in real-time physical competition capabilities.
