Portland-based startup Panthalassa is reportedly raising $225 million at a near-$2 billion valuation to build ocean-powered AI data centers. Co-led by 8090 Industries and Hanwha Asset Management, the round would double the company's valuation from May 2026. Panthalassa's 85-meter floating nodes convert wave energy into electricity to power onboard GPUs, using seawater for cooling and satellites for data transmission. While promising cheap, clean power, the technology faces severe marine risks.
