At least 49 Nigerien nationals died of thirst in the Sahara Desert after their truck broke down while returning from a festival in Mali. Two men survived by walking over 50km to alert authorities. A rescue team found the deceased and also discovered a second stranded truck with over 60 people, highlighting the extreme dangers of the major West African migration route through Niger.

Sahara Desert truck breakdown deaths

▪The truck became stranded more than 80km (50 miles) west of Assamaka after it veered off its intended route.
▪The driver and passengers unsuccessfully attempted to repair the vehicle over several days before running out of water.
▪At least 49 people, all Nigerien nationals, died of thirst in the Sahara Desert in northern Niger after their truck broke down.
▪The group was returning from the Malian town of Talhandek after attending the Muslim festival of Eid al-Adha.

Rescue team discovers survivors

▪A rescue team dispatched by authorities found dozens of lifeless bodies and buried the victims in mass graves at the scene.
▪Two men survived by trekking more than 50km (31 miles) to a water source and then to the town of Assamaka to alert authorities.

Second stranded vehicle rescue

▪While returning, the rescue team found another broken-down lorry with more than 60 people who had been stranded for three days.
▪The second group, which departed from Harouba, Mali, was stranded due to a battery failure and was given water by the rescue team.

Desert migration route dangers

▪The governor of Agadez described the area as a hostile environment where extreme temperatures and a lack of supply points make survival difficult.
▪Chehuo Azizou, head of a local NGO, stated that such deadly incidents are not unusual on migration routes heading to Libya or Algeria.
