Dr Heather Leslie, the first scientist to detect microplastics in human bloodstream, has authored a comprehensive report examining prenatal and childhood microplastic exposure from medical and environmental sources. The research reveals that premature babies receive up to 115 microplastic particles over 72 hours from IV feeding circuits alone, while operating rooms contain up to 9,258 microplastic particles per square meter during single shifts. Medical devices including cardiac catheters, breast implants, and orthopaedic implants inadvertently dose patients with microplastics, while children face heightened exposure through toys, building materials, formula packaging, and paint containing quadrillions of polymeric particles. The report, funded by Plastic Soup Foundation and Flotilla Foundation and drawing on over 350 peer-reviewed studies, also identifies emerging concerns about stratospheric aerosol injection geoengineering programs in the UK and US that may release micro-sized polymeric particles into the atmosphere.
