YouTube Testing AI-Powered Conversational Search for Premium Subscribers

YouTube is testing 'Ask YouTube,' a conversational AI search feature that provides step-by-step results combining text, full-length videos, and Shorts in response to natural language queries like 'plan a 3-day road trip from San Francisco to Santa Barbara.' The feature is currently available only to YouTube Premium subscribers aged 18 or older in the United States as of April 28, 2026, on an opt-in basis through a specific URL. Google plans to eventually expand access to non-Premium users and may explore sponsored placements within the AI-generated results. This rollout is part of Google's broader strategy to deploy AI mode-styled conversational search across multiple platforms, following the introduction of AI mode in 2025 and subsequent features like side-by-side web browsing and Gemini's Canvas in 2026.
