A 2026 study published in Frontiers in Psychology analyzing 331 children aged 6-12 at Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region People's Hospital has identified three distinct ADHD subtypes driven by different brain systems and neural pathways. The research found that inattention symptoms, which remain stable across development and affect both genders equally, are most strongly predicted by learning challenges, while hyperactivity-impulsivity symptoms, which decrease with age and are more common in boys, are strongly associated with emotional dysregulation, oppositional behaviors, and specific sleep-wake transition disturbances like restless sleep and nightmares. The study also revealed a possible low-anxiety, high-impulsivity subtype, as anxious behaviors appear to suppress hyperactive symptoms. These findings suggest that children with primarily inattentive ADHD may benefit most from academic support and cognitive interventions, while those with hyperactive-impulsive presentations may respond better to behavioral therapy, emotional regulation support, and sleep quality interventions.
