Massive Ukrainian Drone Strike on Moscow Region Kills at Least Five in One of War's Largest Attacks on Russian Capital

May 19, 2026

Ukraine launched one of its largest drone strikes on Moscow on May 17-18, 2026, killing at least five people including three in the Moscow region and damaging residential buildings and energy infrastructure. Russia reported downing 1,054 Ukrainian drones in 24 hours, with 81 intercepted over Moscow alone, while several airports suspended operations. The attack follows a failed U.S.-brokered ceasefire and comes as tensions rise inside Russia over internet restrictions, which authorities defend as necessary to counter drone targeting systems. The strike represents an escalation in Ukraine's deep-strike capabilities in the war's fifth year, even as Putin claims the conflict is nearing its end.
