Russian strikes on Kyiv and other Ukrainian cities kill at least 11, trap victims in rubble

Russia has launched a massive overnight missile and drone attack on Ukrainian cities, killing at least 11 people in Kyiv and Dnipro and injuring dozens more. The barrage, which included unintercepted hypersonic Zircon missiles, damaged residential buildings and trapped civilians in rubble. Russia claims the strikes targeted military facilities in retaliation for Ukrainian attacks, following recent warnings from Moscow that it would escalate its assault on the capital.

Kyiv residential building strikes

▪Russia's overnight attack on Kyiv on June 2, 2026, killed at least four people and injured at least 63 others.
▪A nine-story apartment building in Kyiv's Podilskyi district partially collapsed, trapping people under the rubble.
▪The strikes damaged residential buildings in eight of Kyiv's districts, including multi-story apartment blocks.

Dnipro casualties and damage

▪A second Russian strike in the Dnipropetrovsk region targeted first responders after they arrived at a scene, killing one rescuer.
▪Maj. Anton Yarmolenko, a deputy fire and rescue chief, was among those killed in Dnipro while responding to a call.
▪In the central city of Dnipro, Russian strikes killed at least six people and injured at least 35.

Russian escalation warning

▪Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky had warned citizens on June 1, 2026, of a possible large-scale Russian assault.
▪Russia stated the attack was retaliation for "terrorist acts committed by the Kyiv regime."
▪Russia's Ministry of Defense claimed its "massive strike" targeted Ukrainian defense, military, fuel, and transport facilities.

Ukrainian air defense performance
