The long-standing alliance between Canada and the United States has fractured following the collapse of trade negotiations in Washington. In response to the breakdown, the U.S. imposed 50% tariffs on $20 billion of Canadian goods. Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney declared Canada is "at war" after being "attacked" by the duties, and vowed to implement dollar-for-dollar retaliatory tariffs starting September 8, 2026. Canada is now accelerating its economic diversification strategy to reduce its reliance on the U.S. market.
