Google researchers published findings on Tuesday showing quantum computers may require 20 times fewer qubits than previously estimated to break elliptic curve cryptography (ECDSA over secp256k1) that secures Bitcoin, Ethereum, and much of internet infrastructure. The research suggests fault-tolerant quantum machines capable of cryptographic attacks could arrive by 2029-2032, with Ethereum researcher Justin Drake estimating at least a 10% chance of Q-Day by 2032. Google recommends the cryptocurrency community transition to post-quantum cryptography, which is already well understood but difficult to implement at scale. While Bitfinex analysts characterize quantum computing as a genuine engineering challenge rather than an existential threat, experts warn that successful quantum attacks would put the entire internet at risk, not just cryptocurrency networks.
